Introduction: Input modalities

This module covers accessibility guidelines that make it easier for users to operate functionality through mouse, keyboard, touch or voice input. There are other kinds of input devices, such as sip-and-puff and eye-tracking devices, but most of these assistive technologies create simulated keyboard keystrokes as their output.

Accessible input benefits everyone including people with disabilities:

  • People who are blind cannot use a mouse because it requires hand-eye coordination.
  • People with hand tremors may find using a mouse difficult and rely on a keyboard.
  • Keyboard users benefit if the focus indicator is visible.
  • People who use mobile devices where touch screen is the primary input mode.
